Genetic engineering bypasses every single biological boundary in the animal and plant kingdom. The mass release of thousands of genetic materials may mean biological genetic pollution that is irreversible. This can mean the end of nature.

Rifkin proposes that humanity establish the gene pool as the commons to be protected as a trust for all time - as we did with Antarctica. Genes belong to millions of years of evolution. They are not the political or private property of a state or a corporation.
